Six Hungarian Students at the Heart of European Decision-Making - This Year’s ConSIMium Concludes in Brussels

This year’s ConSIMium decision-making simulation was successfully held on 5-6 February in Brussels, at the premises of the Council of the European Union. The event offered six selected Hungarian university students the opportunity to take part in intensive negotiations and policy discussions over the course of two days, modelling the work of the Council of the European Union. The aim of the programme is to allow participants to experience first-hand the complexity and challenges of EU decision-making in realistic policymaking roles.

The preparation of the six students was carried out by the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference (HRC) with the support of the National Union of Students in Hungary (HÖOK) and the Ludovika University of Public Service (LUPS). On behalf of LUPS, Csaba Zalai, lecturer at the Department of European Studies, on behalf of HÖOK, Bálint Koós, Vice President responsible for foreign affairs, and on behalf of MRK, Fanni Kiss, International Officer, provided professional support to the delegation.

The simulation focused on highly relevant economic and foreign policy issues. Participants discussed and debated on the anti-coercion instrument (ACI), as well as the EU-level screening and regulation of foreign direct investment (FDI). Throughout the programme, students were required to represent differing national interests while reaching compromises under tight time constraints, closely reflecting real-life decision-making processes.

Members of the Hungarian delegation demonstrated a high level of preparedness, strategic thinking, and strong cooperation skills. As a result of a competitive selection process, the following six students were chosen as the most outstanding candidates and thus represented Hungary at this year’s ConSIMium simulation:

  •  Donát Harkányi – Ludovika University of Public Service
  •  Amadé Murányi – IBS International Business School
  •  Luca Piller – Ludovika University of Public Service
  •  Nóra Széles – Hungarian University of Sports Science
  •  Bálint Szent-Imrey – Ludovika University of Public Service
  •  Flóra Emma Varga – Széchenyi István University

During the simulation, students not only deepened their knowledge of EU economic policy and law, but also developed key competencies such as interest representation, negotiation techniques, rapid decision-making, and international teamwork. The programme also provided an excellent opportunity for professional networking and gaining valuable international experience.
