Debating Skills - Student Debate Competition

On 23 november 2024, the walls of the ELTE Radnóti Miklós Elementary and Secondary School became the venue for exciting debates and thought-provoking discussions. On this day, the Debating Skills - Student Debating Competition was organised in cooperation with the MRK Connexus Mobility Foundation's consortium partners, the Association of Foundation and Private Schools and the Association of Practical Schools. We were particularly pleased to welcome more than 20 teams from all over the country, proving that many of them were keen to try themselves at this unique challenge.

The competition featured teams of three students who tested their knowledge and argumentation skills on topical and thought-provoking issues such as the impact of artificial intelligence and the social and economic consequences of globalisation. The programme gave students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the values of a debate culture, which not only serves to develop logical thinking, but also contributes to promoting tolerance and understanding. Such events are of paramount importance, as they help to introduce more and more young people to the world of debate culture.

At the end of the day, the team from the II. Rákóczi Ferenc High School from Budapest emerged as the best team, and won the right to represent Hungary in the international round in Brussels in April 2025. The winning team was made up of Olívia Pimm, Mia Niczki-Otto and Áron Balázs, who achieved the outstanding result under the guidance of their teacher, Emese Szabó. Congratulations to them for their excellent performance! The Brussels round will also be held in English, where the students will have the opportunity to show their talents on the international stage.

Another highlight of the event was the training for teachers, organised in collaboration with the Portuguese CEPCEP (The Research Centre on Peoples and Cultures of Universidade Católica Portuguesa), with the support of Porticus Iberia. The aim of the training was to provide teachers with a comprehensive insight into the methodology and relevance of the culture of debate, enabling them to integrate the knowledge acquired into their everyday teaching practice.

The day was a valuable and lasting experience not only for the students but also for the teachers, while stressing the importance of the debate culture. Congratulations to all participants!
